MUMMIFIED FOETUS

A cow with a prolapse mass, protruding out from the urinary opening, was left to its fate by an unknown master on Chhalesar road (an outskirt area of Agra). The poor cow had perhaps been roaming around like this for many days. It was Mr. Hari Om Singh, an advocate in civil court of Agra, who informed PFA Agra office to provide the necessary medication.

The vet. along with the para-vet staff reached  the spot and brought the animal to the shelter, after providing emergency medical aid. At the shelter, the animal was thoroughly checked and the cause of the ailment was ascertained. The cause of the problem was a dead foetus.

The prolapsed mass was pushed in after an antiseptic wash and injection for dilatation of cervical opening was given, but with no result. Finally surgery had to be performed. The uterus was fully filled with pus and foetal bones. Pus and bones were removed and cow was put on life supporting treatment and liquid diet. After 10 days stitches were removed. Cow started taking solid food. After 15 days the patient was put with other shelter inmates. Today the cow is in sound health and it is leading a normal  life.

PFA Agra invites its readers to share their stories (in not more than 250-300 words) of close encounters with animals that changed their lives in a positive way. It would be good if you could send pictures also. The pictures should be sent as separate attachments in the email. Please do not embed them in the word document.

  • This month we have started repair work which is being sponsored by a local well wisher who had come to our shelter during the tree plantation ceremony. Seeing the deteriorating condition of the doors and the general condition he asked to start the repair work . We are grateful to Mr O.P Agarwal for his help.
  • Our shelter had a lot of cows and as such they were a drain on our food resources. So with the kind help of Mr Mukesh Jain we transferred them to a Gaushala (A home for Cows) called "Govind Gaudham" at Mathura. This is a very well organized  and well maintained place. They have a separate enclosure for blind cows and calfs too. We sent 12 cows, including the one we mentioned above in our story for this month.

  • This month the monsoon played havoc. The swollen Jamuna river entered our shelter and the lower terrace was completely under water. The water covered 2 steps of the stairs leading up the dispensary. Luckily the 3rd and final step was spared or it would have entered the rooms. No animal was however in danger
  • Two trucks carrying cows for slaughter were caught by the Sahadabad police and the injured cows were brought to our shelter. 7 in number. Of them 2 had died on the way because they were severely injured.
