Since 2003 I am regularly visiting the shelter of PFA Agra, the last time being this year in March. During my visit I live in the shelter so that I can always be in direct contact with the animals. Most of the animals I already know for years and I always feel glad to meet them again.

The shelter is full of different kinds of animals, like cows abandoned or injured in accidents, monkeys which often get seriously burned by heavy electrical currents, donkeys injured in accidents or mistreated by men, sometimes even birds with broken wings, cats and dogs abandoned, ill, mistreated, injured or even nearly starving to death. Some animals can recover from their pathetic conditions, but unfortunately for others help comes too late.

The cows and donkeys live in cowshed with a fenced area. A special area is dedicated for the blind ones. The ill dogs are kept in kennels. The cats and monkeys are kept in a small animal shed. There are two special kennels which are used for spayed dogs which have to stay for a couple of days for the follow-up-treatment. The ABC program is very important and done regularly. After treatment the dogs are released to the area where they come from.

There are also permanent dogs living in the shelter, like those that are handicapped, puppies which are later not used to street life, old dogs and frightened ones - in fact all those who are not able to survive on the street. For the paralyzed dogs a special kennel is reserved with a little fenced ground, to move outside, so that they can participate in shelter life. For blind dogs also, a special kennel is reserved. When I was there, to help these blind dogs, we started a training program so that they learn to move around in the shelter. The rest of the permanent dogs can move freely in the shelter and they really love it. The shelter has enough space for them to run or to rest.

Altogether it can really become a paradise for the animals only if there are enough funds to realise it...

Current situation of PFA AGRA

                      Hawk with injured wing
Being someone who is working with PFA AGRA for so many years, I have seen it struggle from one month to another for its own survival. There is a lot of repairing necessary in the shelter. Some more kennels are needed because the number of injured dogs is increasing. For staffing, PFA needs one more veterinarian and more workers. At the moment there are only 4 workers which is surely not enough. Because of the shortage of workers, there is no time to give special attention to the animals. For example paralyzed dogs, puppies or even the blind ones for more training - they all need special attention and care. The medical equipment is very basic. They need x-ray, ultra sound and a machine for blood tests. With
better equipments it is easier to make the right diagnosis, which is important for the survival of the animals. Trainees are always welcome, they could play with the puppies, train the blind dogs or just simply go around, talk and caress the animals. It is so easy to make the animals happy.
The responsibility of looking after injured or mistreated animals falls not only with animal welfare organizations but also with every citizen. One can't just put the whole work load and costs on some organizations and the rest avoids responsibility.
The animals are the weakest members of a society and should be protected against neglect and mistreatment by the humans.

PFA Agra Activities
  • This month was a month full of crisis. 2 of our employees left as they were unhappy with the pay package
  • We had to make arrangements in the cow shed to overcome the heat wave and the shortage of electricity. Improvised cooling pads were installed on the west side of the shelter, facing the river. Wooden frames with grass were fixed on the windows. These were attached to the pipes with holes, which in turn were connected to the overhead tank. The flow of water can be controlled with nozzles fixed to the pipe. The trickling water wet the dry grass and the breeze blowing from the river cooled the shed with added breeze from the fans, donated by well-wishers.
